As a custom home builder, each home is different. However, there are features that we feel are
important, such as energy saving devices. There are getting to be more choices for green products
and energy saving features. Some of our recommended specs for a home are as follows:
- Higher SEER heating and cooling systems.
- Use of variable speed fans in heating and cooling systems to help reduce humidity in the home.
- Proper sizing of units. Too large will not reduce humidity, too small will not heat/cool properly.
- Quiet high efficincy exterior units, so that you can hear the birds and not a loud AC compressor.
- Use of Puron refrigerant in the heating and cooling systems.
- Radiant barrier roof decking and ridge vents, or completely sealing the attic with spray
foam insulation to reduce heat in attic.
- There are more choices to insulate homes. These include the typical batts and blown insulation,
spray foam insulation, which seals the home better, ICF walls, and SIP panels. The size of the
heating and cooling system is determined by the insulation, so the tonnage can be reduced with the
better insulation packages.
- Double pane windows with Low-E glass made for our southern climate. Studies show that efficient
windows are more important than increasing the wall insulation, so the type of windows should
be considered.
- Engineered designed foundations.
- Vent hoods and fans that vent to the outside to help reduce humidity in the home.
- Building techniques that help reduce the likelyhood of mold problems.
- Use of low to no VOC paints, and products that are better for people and the environment.
